Her Reality

An excerpt from Pieces of the Puzzle, Volume 2 – Our Reality by Trinda Latherow.

In Loving Memory of Mother

It still seems like yesterday when we were all gathered around the kitchen table enjoying one of her great meals, homemade pies or cakes, telling stories, and laughing about all of the crazy things each of us did while growing up. My mother-in-law and matriarch of the family had become a young wife, mother to three (the youngest being my husband), grandmother to six, great-grandmother to twelve and great-great-grandmother to two in her life. She married her high school beau and was eventually, blessed with countless more children as an elementary school cafeteria manager. She taught herself how to play the organ, baked to perfection, enjoyed the outdoors, and loved her family. She was beloved by many, but especially her husband of greater than six decades.

When her husband passed away before her, she quickly succumbed to Dementia, drifting in and out of our reality and into another for nearly a decade. We hoped it was a better one, but all we knew for sure was that she would occasionally come back to us or see us, know us, and love us once again, if only ever so briefly. It was our bond of love, which most likely kept her here for so long, but also that which would eventually allow her to peacefully, return whence she came at the age of 92.

While family and friends were having a hard time with her slowly slipping away from us, my husband and I prayed she was visiting with Dad and loved ones who had gone on before her. We prayed the angels were guiding her both here and there. We prayed she knew of how much we loved her, but wished her spirit free. Bedside with her daughter until she passed, the time we all awaited came when we were asked to leave her room. With a change in caregivers, Mother found that fleeting moment when she could leave without any fuss. More times than not, our loved ones quietly transition when our attention is elsewhere, most assuredly for our benefit, for it is our bond of love that causes them to do so. It is love that allows them to move on more easily, peacefully, and joyfully reunite with those who have gone on before.

RuthIt is a difficult thing to say good-bye to our friends and loved ones, but whenever we see the blessing instead of the loss, we remember that death is but a transition into another reality and the bond of love we formed here is never truly broken. It is as eternal as we are. This is not an empty promise to soothe the soul, but a truth or knowing that comes to us whenever we experience the miraculous or simply unexpected. Whenever we are a witness to the supernatural in the natural world. Whenever we are a witness to the many wonders of this reality and glimpse something of yet another. Whenever we are a witness to a greater power and presence that is active in our world and us. Know that not only is there is the miraculous within the mundane or unexpected within our world and us, but also that it can indeed be recognized by us, if we are first open to being a witness. If only we would come to see all of our blessings instead of our losses.

Mother was a blessing in our lives and is remembered here as a reminder to all to see the countless blessings in your life, your family members, friends, and beloved animal companions. See your interconnectedness to everyone and everything. See the eternal bonds that you are creating through all of your relationships. Gather around the kitchen table, share in meals together, tell your stories, and laugh about all the crazy things each may have done while growing up, but also try to recognize your many blessings. Live a wondrous life filled with countless experiences. Remain open to the miraculous. Appreciate this gifted life. Then, whenever your divine time comes to but simply cross over into another reality, you are sure to pass more easily and peacefully by simply knowing that the bonds of love you formed here go with you there into an afterlife and infinite beyond.
